I need some advice
I'm trying to decide which tier of what system to build but I have no idea just how powerful a video card and processor I need. I will list the most demanding things I will do with the computer and I would really love a recommendation. Thank you for your help guys.

Flawless double 24in 1080p Monitor extended mode handling
Decode/ Encode DVD Movies
1080p Playback of mkv files
Full Screen Hi-Def Flash Video Streaming
Running of Statistical Software - Nothing too crazy

By "Flawless double 24in 1080p Monitor extended mode handling", you mean simply running two monitors side by side without any problems/slowdowns and the like?

As far as I understand, you don't plan on gaming on this PC, correct?

RE: I need some advice
Yes, thats right, I don't plan on doing any gaming on this computer and that's exactly what I mean about the monitors. Only reason I brought that up is that outputting to a second monitor is really hard for my old pos laptop right now and I want that to be a complete non issue on this machine. My gaming fix is fully satisfied by my PS3 and iPad, so I just want this to be a bad ass HD video machine.

One more thing I forgot, I'd like to be able to set up a raid 1 inside inside the case with the potential to eventually throw in an ssd when prices drop a bit more.

Thanks for responding Mathieu

My bad, I read your reply but I forgot to reply myself.

Processor wise, it all depends on how fast you want to encode your DVDs (decoding isn't very demanding, even at 1080p).

An AMD Phenom II X4 840 (~$100) will be pretty fast at it. An Intel Core i5-2500 (~$210) will be even faster, a Core i7-2600 (~$300) is the next step up and a Core i7-970 (~$600) will eat DVD encoding for breakfast (so to speak). Question is: How much are you ready to invest to encode your DVDs faster?

Take a look at this chart to get an idea of the difference in performance for encoding with all four processors:
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/CPU/28

The Athlon II X4 645 is similar (barely slower) than the Phenom II X4 840, so use that as a reference point.

Video Card wise, a Radeon HD 6450 will take care of decoding 1080p content, dual-monitor support and will also accelerate Flash content, while sipping power.

Throw in 4GB of RAM, as for the rest (hard drive, case, psu, etc.), take a look at our Budget Gaming PCs, they should give you an idea of what you're looking for.

For the motherboard, it all depends on the CPU, so come back to me on that and let me know.

For the record, I've been working full time on Hardware Revolution (the main site, not the forums, which were created in November 2010 if my memory serves me right) since April 2010 after leaving my last part-time job. Tongue

Thanks for the kind words for us though, that's always nice to hear Smile
