How can I safely build my PC while standing on carpet?
I don't want to destroy my components with static electricity. I also prefer not to work on my PC while it is plugged in the wall. If I don't have an anti static strap, how can I rid myself of static electricity? I believe the case I want has no bare metal (it's all painted black).

Consider an anti-static mat which you can ground to something and work on.

isnt the way the anti static wrist bands work by keeping you and your computer at the same charge so the wont be a flow of statc electricity, so wont fry any of your components.

if this is correct i believe you would be able to rig something up from your wrist to the case of your computer, and by leaving the power supply plugged in, but off this will ground you.

to prevent static build up you could, get some cardboard boxes and flatten them to stand on reducing the speed at which static will be produced.

wait for someone else to respond as i am new to this, and this is what i think yet would still ask these guys if this is the truth.

Best option would be to build it somewhere without carpet floors, since these are just horrible to work on when you're building a PC. I'm sure that a part of where you live doesn't have carpet (bathroom perhaps?)

Otherwise, your best option is to touch your case with our hand (paint is not an issue) before handling any part.

Does the PSU need to be plugged in before I touch the metal?

No, you do not want the PSU to be plugged for any reason when you're installing parts, that's just asking for an accidental electric shock Wink

No, on the contrary, they hold a static charge, much like a balloon

RE: How can I safely build my PC while standing on carpet?
Alright, I'll build it in the kitchen (I got tile there) and I'll touch the case with both hands before handling any parts. I won't be using an anti static strap because I'm cheap. Thanks for the help!
