Can't get my screen to work with computer
So I just finished building my first computer, and when I went to boot it to see if it works, i found that my monitor would not work with my video card. The monitor only has a vga cord, but the videocard came with a vga/dvi adapter so that I could plug the monitor into the video card. When I turned the computer on, the fans started and everything else was functional, but nothing showed up on the screen. I also tried to plug the monitor into the vga port on the motherboard as well to no avail. Any assistance anyone has would be appreciated. Thanks for the help!

Build:
Phenom II 965 3.4 Quad Core
Radeon 6850
2 500gb Seagate Barracuda HHDs
Asus Motherboard

What is the name/brand of the monitor and video card? Did you just buy your monitor new?

The monitor is Acer, and isn't new(probably about 5 yrs old), and the video card is Sapphire Radeon 6850. Thanks!

Are you positive the monitor works? Have you tried plugging it into a different computer?

Yep, the monitor works fine with my old computer, but is unresponsive when I try to boot my new rig.

Do you have an HDTV, or anything you could connect your video card to via DVI to check if the video card or cables are working?

RE: Can't get my screen to work with computer
i tried using the computer hooked up to my hdtv through hdmi cables and also tried using the monitor with dvi cables, but neither gave me different results. I guess that means that its a problem with the rig itself and not the compatibility with my monitor. What would be the best course of action to isolate the problem? Thanks!

Try this:

1. Turn off all power.
2. Remove Video Card.
3. Connect VGA from your HDTV to your motherboard's VGA.
4. Boot up the computer.

If that doesn't work, then try it with the DVI.
If it does work then switch the main graphics in your BIOS to PCI Express, shutdown, plug DVI or VGA into Video Card.

If neither works, then there is an issue with your motherboard and or Video Card.
