win 10 oem upgrade, EULA after cpu and MB swap
this even adds to the confusion, maybe this guy got lucky, i dont know. anyway i was asked about upgrading from an amd phenom 4 to an intel platform, i recommended i5-6500 because he is cheap, lol. so i told him the procedure, wiping MB drivers blah, blah and so on. then i told him that he "might" have to buy a new copy of windows since the OEM eula followed to the win10 free upgrade. i also told him to make sure that he had the anniversary update and a microsoft account as it is supposed to make the transition easier.

after the cpu and MB swap, windows stalled and hung a few times but after a couple of reboots win 10 installed all of the drivers, etc. well here is the confusing part, when his win 10 oem liscense didnt authenticate, he got online and chatted with Microsoft. he told them this was an "upgrade" on the same machine as win 10 was upgraded too. the tech said no problem, that is within your eula. the tech, remote logged in, ran a command and bam, his machine was as good as new.

i know after the anniversay update they added a tool for hardware swaps and makes it easy as pie but i was looking at MS tech support site and they was saying that this did not include the OEM editions. so either he got a newbie tech or they are including OEM as far as MB upgrades. just thought id post this as to same some folks some time and money. if you upgrade a cpu or MB on an OEM eula, then give the MS chat a shot.

Yeah I thought it was considered a brand new machine with a MB swap. But to be fair most everything about Windows 10 the past year has been confusing. Even for MSFT employees apparently.

Guess we can enjoy it while it lasts. Wink
