ISOs, compression software locking down files from use
So I downloaded an ISO and of course, the user compresses it (even though it's basically uncompressable, being an ISO) to make ad revenue. Is my only option literally downloading the software to uncompress it? Why can't I just change the file extension and unzip it? I've tried that btw and it didn't seem to work. I can't choose file explorer from a list of programs to open it with also.

This is not my first time dealing with this I usually just acquire an indefinitely extended trial of the forced product, but I've always been curious about this.

have you tried 7zip? I've found it does an amazing job dealing with different archive formats.

http://www.7-zip.org/

Another far as installing things like this, this is one area that I use a virtual machine. I setup a VM fresh from a copy, the VM is pretty much locked down from a firewall inbound/outbound point of view, then I ftp the crappy installer to it, run it, in this case to uncompress the ISO, then burn down the VM.

There might even be a free, or nearly free tier at Azure that would allow the same thing but I haven't explored that. (assuming this is windoze )

Funny, the extension is .7z, I'm not sure why I didn't mention that.

windows will also xtract .7z extensions using winzip but you just dont hit the unzip button.

after you download the compress file, open up winzip and file/open the file and select all of the folders. create another folder where ever, ie docs, desktop, etc and name it what you want. click on 1 click unzip and send it to the new folder you created. this will decompress it and you can use windows media to burn to dvd as an iso. or you can download iso burner for windows 8.1/10 if hats your os.
pretty much the same process for 7-zip too.

after your done and if you want delete the zip file to save space or not.

7zip supports AES 256 encryption so it might be encrypted.

If so, the downloaded program would have the key.

I think I'd install it on a temp VM at the "free level" .

winzip also supports aes 128/256.

a VM is a good idea especially if from an unknown source. thanks for the link, i didnt know MS gave anything away for free lol.

aws also has a free tier. https://aws.amazon.com/free/

but I thought azure might be better for a windows system.

Any reason why you guys are suggesting cloud based options versus just running Windows Virtual PC?

Is it a matter of security or Isolation?

Is cloud based options always the vms you run Dan-H as mentioned in other posts?

RE: ISOs, compression software locking down files from use
I mentioned the cloud options because they don't need any local setup.

I use virtualbox on my PC at home, but it is to run linux systems.

And the reason is to isolate whatever the installer might be installing if I don't trust it.
