yeah but the difference between bulldozer and zen is that bulldozer didnt have jim keller as the lead engineer.

anyway though, lisa su said that the estimations were underperforming and it is more like 60 percent increase in ipc over the last gen. now depending on which last gen she is talking about, AND if that is correct, then they will have a competetive cpu, especially in the data center/supercomputer and server sector in which it was designed. jim favored this design over foing with ARM. they dont have to beat intel they just need to be within reach, competetive pricing and adequate power consumption numbers to do that. lisa su to also said not to expect suffient desktop parts until the end of the year.

2017 is going to be an exciting year as ibm is unleasing their 9 series cpu fabbed on the same 14nm finfet. they won the contract for the ORNL summit super computer project that is supposed to be the fastest most effecient ever designed with a fraction of the cpu cores.

and like you said, i always take it with a bucket of salt.
