i3-4160 or i3-6600 for budget micro-ATX gaming?
Hi, I'm going to build a new budget quiet gaming PC, maybe ~$700. I like the micro-ATX case size. For now, I spec'ed out the following:

i3-6100 $125
Gigabyte GA-H110M-A $55
Strix GTX 950 2GB $160
2x4GB DDR4 2133 $48
Sandisk 240GB $75
CORSAIR CX500M $50
SilverStone PS08B $40
Windows 10 $94
Total = $647

On this site, I see the recommended Tier2 CPU/Mobo combo is: i3-4160 and Gigabyte GA-H81M-HD3 H81. The price and performance seem very similar between that and my choices. Is there any reason to go with one over the other? Thanks!

I think you could shave a few dollars staying with Haswell, and DDR3 and for that class of motherboard and that speed of memory and that CPU the performance will be nearly identical

The CPUs are very close. The i3-4160 is about $3-$5 less than a i3-4170, which is about $10-15 less than the i3-6100.

For example: DDR3 1600 CL8 on sale for $39.

This MoBo is $51 After rebate and is a touch better than the H110M with four memory slots and a few more SATA ports.

Take that $20 to $25 and step up to a GTX 960 and you might see a slight overall gaming improvement.
CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.7Ghz Mobo: Gigabyte Z97X Gaming 5 GPU: MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4G HSF: Cryorig R1 Ultimate
Mem: 2 x 8GB G.Skill TridentX DDR3 2400 SSD: Samsung 850 Evo 500GB + a few spinners
PSU: Seasonic SS-760XP Platinum Case: Fractal Design Define R5 Monitors: 2 x Dell 2007FP 1600x1200

either will work, that article hasnt been updated, and you are right the performance is about the same. i agree with danh as haswell is seeing a little price reduction right now and when they are gone they probably wont be restocked as skylake is seeing some good production numbers out to retailers.

Thanks for the replies. For the small price difference, I think I'll stick with the i3-6600 for the lower TDP power usage and future-proofing.
