Building PC for the first time - need your advice
HuhI am building a new PC for the first time and need your good suggestions for a new rig mainly for rendering and gaming. My budget is around US$ 2000/- Would i7 6700 alongwith the GTX 980Ti be a good combination for the required job. Any suggestions please for the entire rig which included power supply, ram, motherboard, case, cooling, hard disk, etc. Thanks for your time and guidance.

$2K is a healthy budget.

Do you have a monitor already or is that part of the 2K. Do you have keyboard/mouse/speakers?

I would use the Tier7 Gaming system as a starting point, but recognize it is a little out of date.

Replace the CPU with an i7 6700K and a Gigabyte Z170 motherboard like this:

or any of these.

(Gigabyte / Z170 chipset / at least one M.2 slot and four memory slots).

You'll want DDR4 memory, but I haven't researched this well enough to make a recommendation.

I'd look at an M.2 SSD if you can afford it, or at least a 500G SATA3 SSD like a samsung evo 850.

I would read about how important each part is, and decide how important it is to you and factor that in.

Good luck,

start picking parts, post a complete list here and get input. In the end it is your money, your choice and your decision.

for a system of this price I would go with the i7 6700K.

The graphics card is the next most expensive part. Pick one. Read lots of reviews and see what others have to say.

Pick a case/MoBo size.

Choosing case and motherboard size (ATX vs microATX) is a good next step. If you are OK with a fullsize case that can hold a fullsize ATX card then you have more choices for motherboards. If you want a smaller case that will only hold microATX you can focus your MoBo search on microATX. Since it is your first build, you might want to stay with the mainstream cases and motherboards vs the really small Mini ITX.

Then choose a Motherboard, memory and the rest. I would generally follow the tier 7 gaming system items, but you might want to research some of the recently added power supplies. The advice I got on this forum was don't cheap out on the PSU, and it doesn't hurt to get more PSU than you need. You may need 500 to 600 Watts, but it won't hurt to get a 750W or 850W PSU if the price and specs are good.
