Wait for Geforce GTX 980 or alternative?
Hi --

I have put together parts for my first build (thanks to everyone who helped with that). I want to get the Geforce GTX 980, but unfortunately, because inventory is low, the price of the card ranges from $650 -$1000+. Should I:

1. Wait a few weeks until the card comes back in stock
2. Pay @ $80 more for the card (assuming I can still get it for $650)
3. Consider alternatives (if so, please let me know what you recommend; I don't mind spending more if the card is worth it). What about the Asus Geforce GTX 970?

Thanks.

Can anyone recommend MSI as a manufacturer of GPUs? I just found GTX 980 4GD5 (afterburner) for $549. Originally, I was planning on Asus.

Here's my current build:

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD3H-BK ATX LGA1150
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1866 Memory
SSD: Samsung 840 EVO 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 3TB 3.5" 7200RPM I
Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX 980 4GB Video Card
Case: Cooler Master HAF 932 Advanced ATX Full Tower Case
PSU: XFX ProSeries 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX
Optical Drive: Asus DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS DVD/CD Writer
Sound card: Asus Xonar DGX 24-bit 96 KHz Sound Card

RE: Wait for Geforce GTX 980 or alternative?
I think I'd wait for a 980.

I have two msi graphic cards, a gtx 760, and a gtx 770. No complaints. I found a review of the GTX-970s

http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/graphic...0-review/1

When I was shopping for the 760, I found EVGA often was rated slightly higher than MSI, but the price when I bought was about $40 more.

When I bought the 770, it was a one-day deal for about $70-80 less than the EVGA, and the ASUS.

-- edit: not sure which 980 you found in stock. The MSI dual fan "Twin Frozr" are the style that I have, and the style listed for the 970 in the review. I think there are differences between this style and the single fan style that are more than just the fan.

I'd wait, the last time NVIDIA had a shortage like this, it didn't last long.

The 970 is only 10%-ish slower than the 980, so it's no slouch.

+1 to what Rapajaz said.

The 970 is the best deal IMHO, unless you need the performance from the 980.
