First Time Build
Hi!

I'm totally new to building computers but I've been doing a lot of reading, and I would like to build my first gaming pc. I've put together the parts I think I should get, but I wanted to see if anyone could confirm that all of these are compatible. Also, could anyone give me an idea of the performance I'm likely to see with these parts? My eventual goal is something that can run pretty much everything at 60 fps with 1080p and ultra details on, but I'm not 100% sure what I need to accomplish that.

My build is as follows:

Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO

Rosewill Challenger U3

LG Electronics Optical DVD Drive

Seagate Barracuda 2 TB HDD 3.5 inch Internal Bare Drive ST2000DM001

EVGA GeForce GTX760 2GB GDDR5

Gigabyte ATX Socket AM3+ AMD 970

AMD FD6300WMHKBOX FX-6300 6-Core Processor Black Edition

G. SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8 GB 240-pin DDR3 SDRAM 2133

Corsair CX series 750 Watt ATX/EPS Modular 80 PLUS Bronze

RE: First Time Build
Which games?

I have a GTX 760 with a core i7 4770 and a 1600x1200 monitor.

I'm not sure I get 60 fps or even close.

For Assassin's creed I needed to dial back AA and reflections and fog and "god rays" or it would crash.

Skrim without texture mods does pretty well, but I don't play it very much.

My son's computer is also an i7 4770, but with a GTX 770 and his does better with both AC-4, and skyrim with texture mods and some other games also.

RE: First Time Build
I wanted to be able to play bioshock infinite at max settings. I don't really have a lot of specific games in mind, I like the Arkham series. I mostly play the big triple A releases to be honest. I would play indie stuff, but I just don't have the time. So do you think it would be worth it to go for a better graphics card than what I have listed? And if so, do you have any recommendations?

RE: First Time Build
I first got the GTX 760 for my son, then got a great deal on a GTX-770 so I trade him up for it. I think the 770 is much better, and the just released 970 is even better still.

below are bioshock infinite built-in benchmark results from my system. I bought it when it was on sale but I've not yet played the game. 1600x1200 ultra settings.

Scene Duration (seconds) Average FPS Min FPS Max FPS Scene Name
32.36 114.14 14.91 294.61 Welcome Center
7.07 103.31 15.3 140.75 Scene Change: Disregard Performance In This Section
22.17 141.64 38.05 214.66 Town Center
8.06 119.95 15.72 231.06 Raffle
9.04 198.9 39.7 321.12 Monument Island
3.02 216.96 192.08 237.14 Benchmark Finished: Disregard Performance In This Section
81.73 134.48 14.91 321.12 Overall

sorry about the formatting.

RE: First Time Build
Well, from what you've got, it looks like it could handle it pretty easily haha. Is my processor choice alright?

RE: First Time Build
The third column is min fps, and at time it got lurchy to watch.

I have yet to have time to play so I cannot comment other than the built in bench mark.

My guess is the 760 is under powered for ultra settings and 60 fps.

RE: First Time Build
Hey DrDave - have you completed your build yet? What did you end up going with? I'm finalizing my build now and would love to hear about your experience and your assessment of the various components.

RE: First Time Build
I'd aim for a R9 280X. Higher than that and your CPU will become the bottleneck sooner than later.
