Tier 5 build - question on PCI slots on Gryphon
Hello. I completed the Tier 5 gaming build, went for a r9 290 instead of gtx 770. There are 4 PCI slots on the mobo and here is what I have -

Slot 1 - PCIe 3.0 x16_1 Blocked by Noctua CPU cooler
Slot 2 - PCIe 2.0 x1_1 Free
Slot 3 - PCIe 3.0 x16_2 GPU
Slot 4 - PCIe 2.0 x16_2 Blocked by GPU

1. GPU in slot 3, is that ok?

2. If I don't want to overclock is the Intel CPU cooler enough, or go with something else that is smaller in size so I can use the first PCI slot. If I can move the GPU to slot one I will free up PCI slots 3 and 4 that I can use in the future.

This is not a big deal for me because I am more than happy that everything is working smoothly, first build in 20 years :-). Just want to know my options in case I decide to change something down the line.

Thanks,
AC

1. gpu in slot 3 will work but you will only be running pcie 3.0 at x8 thats why they recommend a single gpu in slot 1 to get the full x16.(it wont matter as no game right now will saturate pcie 3.0 at x8 anyways. but if you are running gpu compute solutions then it will make a difference, depending on software.)

2. if it wasnt enough cooling to run stock they wouldnt make them. yes but you will probably only fit cards in slot 1 and 3.(which would be in the case of crossfired 290's which will run at x8,x8 at pcie 3.0 speed which is the slots you want to run them in.)

good luck

Thank you, that was very clear. I am not running any gpu compute solutions, just games. So I will it as it is for now.

Regards!

Can you rotate the Noctua 90 degrees, and would that make a difference? Depending on the model, I think some can be mounted both horizontally and vertically.
GPU: NVIDIA Titan X, CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K Ivy Bridge 3.4GHz OC'd @ 4.5GHz, Mobo: ASRock Z77 Extreme4, Mem: 2x Corsair Dominator 2133MHz 8GB, SSD: Samsung 850 EVO, Case: Corsair Carbide 500R, PSU: Corsair TX850M, CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D14, Case Fans: 4x Cooler Master Excalibur 120mm PWM, Monitors: 3x ViewSonic VX2270SMH-LED in NVIDIA Surround

yes good idea, and i would add to that to configure your cooler fans to intake from the front over the memory slots and ouput to the rear of the case. you cant use that 1st pcie slot if you have the fans oriented intake from the bottom and exhausting to the top.

good luck
