Do you want to completely cover you ears? Do you want noise canceling?
Here are some links you may find useful.

Cover ears.
Don't matter for sound canceling.

are you going to be running a dedicated sound card or are you looking for a USB type headset with the sound card built in? also is this more for first person shooter games or are you looking for something to do general gaming on and listening to music/movies? if for mostly FPS's then does music reproduction matter to you?

Ima be playing games, all of the sort.
I sometimes listen to music.
I'll be using on board sound, and maybe later getting a sound card so i dont want USB heatset.

Something thats good quality, good for everything.

if you are for sure gonna get a sound card later on, then a sennheiser hd558 paired with a asus xonar dg or dgx sounds pretty awesome. amazon has them for 128 bucks plus free shipping. its a stereo headset but the dg or dgx can emulate 5.1 fairly descent. if you find that the onboard audio works well enough for you with those headphones, then you can download software such as razer surround to emulate 5.1 surround.

if you dont think you will ever get a sound card then a usb headset will sound way more better than on board audio. two quality units come to mind that i have used is the cooler master storm sirus and the corsair vengeance 1500 v2. both are around 100 bucks. i currently use the storm sirus and i like it very well because of the "on the fly" controller that i can adjust audio surround and level in game and its probably the most comfortable headset ive worn. plus the sirus has true 5.1 analog outputs as well to use with a sound card, and you can get it without the usb sound card controller for about 80 bucks.

for music i have the hd 598 paired with an STX card.

good luck

I hear that USB headsets are not so great nor is "simulated" 5.1 sound.

Is this true?

Also I will more then likely order a sound card same time as I do headset.
ASUS Xonar DGX 5.1 PCI-E 1x Sound Card
Probably that.

I'd agree with that statement based on my personal experience.

A dedicated sound with a good pair of stereo headphones will provide far better sound quality than USB "5.1" headsets.
