Gaming/Coding Rig Build Help
Hey all,

I'm new here to the forums and just wanted to post up two builds with recommendations between the two or even within the same build, much thanks in advance for any help or advice!

I want to spend around $1,000 on the rig, as I plan on it lasting a little bit of time to get me through my college gaming needs and as I learn to code on it. I'd mostly be playing WoW (I know, the struggle is real) and Rome Total War II along with other PC specific games.

The first is a pumped up version of the Budget Gaming Rig Tier 2:

Tier 2 parts with the addition of:

- AMD FX-8320 Eight-Core 3.5-4.0GHz AM3+ Unlocked; CPU (+$41)
- G.Skill 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1866MHz; RAM (+$38)
- ASUS VS239H-P 23″ Full HD 1080p IPS 5ms; Monitor (+$150)
- Samsung 840 EVO 2.5″ 120GB SATA III SSD; SSD (+$100)
- No Optical Drive (-$22)
- SilverStone 600W 80 PLUS; Power Supply (+$15)
- NZXT Lexa S 3 x 120mm, 1 x 140mm; Case (+$30)

Total: About $995

Second option would be the Mainstream Gaming Rig Tier 4 as recommended.

Total: $989

WoW runs far better on Intel CPUs, Tier 4 would give you far better FPS, despite the slightly slower video card.

If you remove the optical drive, keep in mind that you'll have to install your OS (Windows I suppose?) another way.

If you want to cut down on cost, you can choose a less expensive Micro-ATX or ATX case from the Budget Gaming PCs.

You can skip the dedicated sound card and use the onboard sound on the motherboard, but sound quality won't be as good. Then again, if you use low cost earphones/headphones or low-end speakers, you probably won't hear a difference.

You can also skip the CPU Cooler (the CPU comes with one), although that will increase noise a bit. The stock cooler isn't that noisy, unless it gets really hot in the room where the PC will be.

You can downgrade to Tier 3 CPU. We're talking about ~5% less CPU performance for $20. Nothing noticeable. Your call.

Finally, you could skip the SSD, but that will greatly increase loading times for Windows, programs and games. I wouldn't recommend it unless you really can't afford it.

Thanks for the quick reply.

So I should go with the Tier 4, and consider a smaller case? I'm also fine with not having a dedicated sound card if the difference won't be monumental. I have a really small 2.1 Logitech speaker set up so sound isn't too wicked of a concern. As for the CPU, I mean, $20 is only $20.

And finally I wanna stick with the SSD for the quick load time with my OS and a game or two that I use a lot and keep it dedicated to those.

Yes, I'd recommend Tier 4. Considering your speakers, onboard sound would be fine. You can always upgrade in the future.

Indeed, $20 is only $20.

Well, Tier 4 by default recommends a smaller Micro-ATX case.

If you want a small case that's less expensive, the Rosewill Line-M ($42), which is recommended for Tier 0.5, 0.75 of the Budget Gaming PCs, will do the job too. It doesn't look as good as the Corsair case recommended in the Mainstream Gaming PCs, but it's also nearly $50 less.

FYI, having an SSD is a blast with WoW. Like 2 second zone loads. You won't even be able to read the helpful loading screen hints!

I remember when I first started playing again with my new rig, and all my guild mates were still standing around on the Zeppelin to Orgrimmar with their clients still loading. I had already loaded and flown away. They were all like "where'd you go?", and I was all like "SSD Suckaaaaaaaas!".

True story.

Damn, I'm the dude standing there waiting for his MacBook to load up the next sequence then, thanks guys.

Anyways, I just had one more question.

If i were willing to spend another like $500 and jump a few tiers would it be worth it? I know that the more you spend the more you get and whatnot, but is it worth it to shell out a bit more money and get that extra performance. In this case I'd be going from the Tier 4 up to the Tier 6? Or maybe I should not be crazy and go with the Tier 5 in the middle?

I guess what I'm asking is, for what I'm doing (gaming with the likes of WoW and TW: Rome II, and buying a rig to get me through school) is it worth it to spend the extra money to upgrade a bit? I guess I'd really be willing to spend around $1,000-$1,500.

P.S. Goddamn thats a slippery slope...

Well, it kind of boils down to your monitor. Your Tier 4 should have no problem running any game maxed out at 1080p, so there's not much of a point in upgrading further. Now, if you wanted to get a higher rez montior, or 3-monitor surround, etc...that's a different story. Even then, you'd still probably be able to get by lowering some settings with the Tier 4.

One option, is the Tier 5, with the T6 Power Supply, and upgraded mobo for Crossfire, (the Gigabyte GA-Z87MX-D3H). That would give you the option to Overclock the CPU, and simply drop in a 2nd R9 280X Video Card down the road, when you need more GPU power. You could shave some money off of that by going with the Tier 4 Cooler (Louder), the Tier 4 RAM, and/or dropping the Sound Card. All of which can be easily added in later.

Okay, I think I know what I want to do then.

I'm thinking I'll just go with the default Tier 5, add in the T6 power, and the mobo you suggested for the micro ATX.

I think that's a happy middle-ground between the T4 and T6 and it should drop me right in there for the middle of the price range. Then, would I be able to run at least a two monitor set up relatively well? If so, what monitor is recommended? The same one recommended in the build and go with two or what?

Also, thank you guys so much for the quick responses and all of the help. It's been great.

You mean stretching a game across 2 monitors, or just using one for gaming and the other for browsing, IM, etc?

Either way, you might as well get 2 of same recommended monitor, in case you want to add a 3rd monitor in later for a matching Eyefinity setup. I'd recommend one of the models with an "IPS" panel, since they have a better viewing angle. Normally viewing angles may not matter, but secondary monitors are usually situated at an angle.
