Finally Installed my Noctua NH-D14
I've had my Noctua NH-D14 sitting in it's box on top of my case for about 2 months now, I figured now would be a good time to actually install it. WOW, what a difference compared to the Hyper 212 EVO. (Not that the Hyper 212 EVO is a bad deal for $60 less.)

1. Installation: I actually spent more time removing my EVO than installing the Noctua. I've used the EVO in a couple builds, but man I hate that springy X bracket thing. The Noctua has a mount that slides through the back, 4 thumb screws that secure the other end, and then the entire assembly is screwed into the bracket with 2 built in screws. Piece of cake.

2. Noise: I could always here the Hyper 212 spin up as soon as I launched a game. At idle, I can't hear the Noctua at all over the case fans, and there's no obvious noise increase under load.

3. Performance: The biggest impact was while idle. I went from an average of 32C per core to 22C. I haven't messed around with the settings much yet, but at load, it never exceeded 85C running Prime95 for an hour, with a 4.5GHz OC. I may be able to OC further, as heat was my only limit last time, and I haven't cranked up the fan speeds yet.

I also installed a 2nd Cooler Master Excalibur onto the top of my case, mostly because there's just a big dust hole there otherwise. (My previous strategy was to leave another text book over it.)

The problem is the only mobo connection available is the "Power Fan", which is just full on, or "CPU 2", which is directly tied to the Noctua. Unfortunately, the Excalibur is insanely loud at full, and tying it to the CPU fan speed would defeat the whole purpose of the quite Noctua. Looks like I need a fan controller now...Too bad the built-in Corsair controller uses stupid proprietary connectors.

It does? Not something that I was aware of. Would you mind posting a picture if said connectors?

Also, I believe that the Noctua cooler comes with resistors, to slow down fans. Couldn't you use one of those to slow down the case fan?

It's annoying, but I think it's one negative mark against an otherwise fantastic case for the money.

Oh, good call on the resistors, I'll try those on the case fans.

It's apparently b/c of the button on front of the case that lets you turn the fan LEDs on and off. I guess that wouldn't work with any old 3-PIN fan you connected?
