laptop stopped working
my sisters 4year old laptop stopped working.
-not powering on
-no lights/display

I can open it up if required as i did that before to clean dust.
Can i draw conclusion that the mobo has gone kaput?
Can thermal paste cause problems?

It could be the power transformer / cord. If your cord or transformer were bad, then the laptop would seem dead. The battery would have discharged fully the last time it was used if the cord was bad. I would start there first.

RE: laptop stopped working
I think the cord is fine. Lights on the adapter are working.
Actually the battery is dead, i mean it cant hold any power.

Anything i should check for other than cord?

So it works on AC power? If so, it is your battery. If not, it is something else. I read your original post to say it won't turn on for anything.

RE: laptop stopped working
nope.
What i mean is the lights on adapter/charger glows so , i confirm that there is no problem associated with the cord.
There is a lenovo name on the adapter which lights up.

Laptop wont power on even on AC.

Will it power on AC if you take the battery out?

I would guess you might need a new laptop as it is likely an issue with the motherboard since you ruled out the battery and the power supply (cord).

RE: laptop stopped working
the only way to test the ac adapter is with a meter. if you get full rated voltage at the barrel then its fine.(just having an led dont mean much)

since you already tried with the battery out, it could also be a defective power board(if its not attached to the MB.) they usually run about 15 bucks. depending on model, the power section maybe built into the MB which would have to be repaired or replaced.
