Brick  White Male Seeking Non-gaming Laptop...
Hey all,

So I'm going to be traveling this summer, and was hoping to bring a laptop with me. My 4 year old netbook is on its last leg (screen only works in certain positions...) so I'm looking to upgrade, preferably for cheap. It's not going to be for gaming (that's what my rig at home is for), so GPU isn't a concern...
Instead, I'm looking for the following:

Fast (4+ GB RAM, Win8 a plus)
Only really needs to run Chrome, Office, and a few media programs (music, movies, etc)
Long Battery Life/Low Power Consumption
Not too small but not too big, probably about a 14" widescreen
Storage around 500 GB - 1 TB
Price tag under $600

Touch screen to use with Win8 would be nice, too...

Any suggestions? I know I can do the research for myself, but figure some of you have some good ideas I could use/consider Smile

Also, I know you can use Win 7 machines as media extenders for my HTPC with a Ceton InfiniTV Cable Card in it, so would that make it worth it to you guys to get 7 instead of 8 for the laptop? If I do get 7, forget the touchscreen entirely...

Thanks!!

For example, these are right up the alley of what I'm thinking....:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/...101-140012
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...-_-Product

I particularly like the price for the second, plus it has all the features I'd really want short of an SSD.
Thoughts?

RE: White Male Seeking Non-gaming Laptop...
Ok, so I've refined my requirements a bit:

Under $450
Screen between 10" and 14.5"
500+ GB HDD
4+ GB RAM
USB 3.0 support
Lightweight (no disc drive needed)

I have three that I've found on Newegg that meet these requirements, and the variations come down to the following choice (from cheapest to most expensive):
14 in non-touchscreen w/ A8 processor ($380, Lenovo)
11.6 in touchscreen w/ i3 processor ($400, ASUS)
14 in non-touchscreen w/ i3 processor ($450, Lenovo)

I'd like to go cheap, and other than these, the specs are mostly the same:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Productcom...312-442-TS
(I hope that link works that way I think it does... In case it doesn'tSmile
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...0516063009
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6834230874
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6834312442

For the record, the second link is basically the same computer that was the best I found at a local best buy, but for $80 less....

I'm not sure how I feel on size. I know from my brother's computer that 15in is too big for me, but I feel my 10in netbook is a bit small for me now. Both of these fit the bill... Also, considering how Win8 is really meant for a touch screen, I like that idea of having that... I know the i3 edges out the A8, but only by a bit for these versions...

Thoughts?
And any deals you guys know about are appreciated Smile

RE: White Male Seeking Non-gaming Laptop...
A 11.6" laptop is quite a bit bigger than a 10" netbook, especially on the screen and the keyboard. 14" is not big, but it's not small either. If you want a lightweight laptop, the 11.6" laptop is the better option. Also to consider, a 11.6" screen will consume less power than a 14" one.

CPU wise, the i3 has a major advantage over the A8-4555M, with significantly higher performance and longer battery life (thanks to lower power consumption).

The ASUS is smaller, has a good CPU, 4GB of RAM, a 500GB HDD, is the only one with a touchscreen and best of all, it comes with a 1 year accidental damage warranty, so if you drop it, spill liquids on it, etc. etc., it's covered by the warranty Smile

Personally, that's the one that I would get.

By the way, Amazon offers it in three colors (Silver, Black and Pink) and offers free shipping: http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-VivoBook-X202...00AEEC2BM/

RE: White Male Seeking Non-gaming Laptop...
Thanks for the response! I've found the silver and pink ones on Newegg, and they have free shipping there too (or like $2), but not the black one, so I'll need to check that out. The more I think about it the more that's the one I'd probably go with, too. Also, I think I get 0% financing on it from Newegg based on being over $250... Not sure about Amazon...

My netbook was a 10" ASUS, and I was impressed by their designing etc, so I know I'll like what they have. I need to go back to Best Buy and check out how the keyboard feels, as I'm not a huge fan of the MacBook style keyboard it looks like it has...

I'll let you know what I go with, thanks again!!

RE: White Male Seeking Non-gaming Laptop...
Ok, I'm pretty sure I'm going to get the ASUS X202E:
http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-VivoBook-X202...00AEEC2BM/
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6834230874

I tend to get decal skins for my mobile stuff, which would in part help in this case as I can't find the black one on Newegg, but that's the better site for me to use at the moment (mostly has to do with PayPal use...). I'll get silver and just use the decal for the actual appearance (silver one looks nice too, I just tend to prefer black Smile )

Anywho, does anyone know of any cool looking ones? Here's a general listing I've found on Amazon that I'm sifting through:

I recommend skinit in the laptop articles: http://bit.ly/14BtLs0

RE: White Male Seeking Non-gaming Laptop...
I skimmed that article and totally missed that, so thanks! How does skinit compare to something like decalrus? decalrus seems to have 3-piece kits (shell, screen border, and keyboard border) for about the same price...? I like the "total cover" idea, which as far as I can tell skinit doesn't have...

Also, are there any particular designs you like? I know it's an opinion thing, but it might be a place to start (personally/presently I'm thinking 3d black carbon fiber texture...or something like that...like this:
