SONS $2k PC NOT WORKING HELP PLEASE
I bought a computer system for my son a week prior to Christmas and I went with a build your own system from Tiger direct.
I am certainly not a computer wiz and have made many mistakes throughout this process. My son is still not able to play his games.
I will start with the fact I've lost my current position with my employer and am ok financially for a few months but can't throw anymore money around like I have so far with this project. I'm hoping you can guide me in the right direction to allow my son to use his $2,000 present and possibly keep my wife from killing me.I have a few days to exchange some parts and can spend another $600-800 to get it right. I will start with the list of equipment we ordered from Tiger Direct

UPDATE HE IS ABLE TO PLAY GUILD WARS 2 ON HIGH SETTINGS AND THAT ONLY CRASHES ONCE EVERY HOUR OR SO.

coolmaster silent pro 1200w power supply
'samsung 24 inch HD monitor

I also went with a cool master silent pro 1200 watt power supply and a 24 inch monitor running HD to HD 1920 x 1080

I am running a windows 8 pro 64 bit OS and he can't play Skyrim or Guilds war 2 on Ultra. He keeps crashing and turning down the setting makes it more stable but still crashes. A few things I've noticed online and what we've tried. I removed two of the memory sticks as 4 weren't recommended by the motherboard just the 2x4 setup. AND is the DDR3 memory and DDR3 Mother board compatible with the DDR5 GPU

RE: SONS $2k PC NOT WORKING HELP PLEASE
is it giving you a bsod message or just freezing? what does it do after crashing,ex reboots or go to bluescreen.

yes the gpu ddr5 is gpu memory, and ddr3 in pc memory, they are compatible as you put it. if this is a diy bundle and since your using windows 8, the first thing i would do is check the bios build and make sure it is the latest version. like ive said in other threads, there have been a bunch of bios updates to fix win8 compatibility and stability problems. the next thing i would do is check the gpu driver and make sure it is the latest. it should have auto updated but be sure.

that system shouldnt have any trouble running skyrim on the ultra preset.

good luck

Thank you,

At first it would lock up and blue screen I guess then there were some updates to drivers that seemed to improve stability somewhat.
Now when he's playing skyrim specifically it will go black screen then will take about 5 seconds and recovers and he can continue playing. Periodically it will completely crash to desktop and it will say
"Display driver has stopped responding and has recovered" then he will need to start game over. He also plays guild wars 2 and doesn't seem to have as many problems on that one but still periodically and I mean maybe once every 90-120 mins it. I do know the bios is not updated to the most recent but when I go to asus updater it has never connected. I have never let it sit for more than 2 mins as I have 32mb internet and figured that should be plenty to connect. I read a post that someone said they had similar issues and they went to the previous driver for the GPU and all was good, also the guy who put it together said something about him not hooking up motherboards graphics as we had the nivida would that make a difference? and what about the 1866mhz ram it seems everyone uses 1600. I did remove 2 sticks to reduce it to 8 from 16 as that was the only approved vendor Asus should for the 1866. I'm pretty clueless on PC's as my laptop is a Mac and that's for work and email/surfing I feel after this experience I may have completed the first semester of classes. Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.

the auto updater in ai suite ii hardly ever works and when it does it doesnt get the most recent. the easiest way is to go to asus.com, support, downloads, select your motherboard and it will bring up a list of downloads. expand the bios selections. get the most recent by date and never the "beta". download from the global site and save it to a usb. when finished unzip that file to the usb you just saved to. delete the original zip folder and have only the .cap unzipped file on the usb.(leave usb connected) reboot and got into bios, hit the advanced tab and go over to tools. make your way to ez flash updater and select the bios .cap file and hit enter.

i would update the bios first before i did anything else. the bios also contains updates for memory kit compatibility as the vendor list only lists their tested kits at that time. retest with skyrim and see what it does and then you can go from there.

good luck

RE: SONS $2k PC NOT WORKING HELP PLEASE
To clarify, the Asus bios update is probably a .cap file rather than .rom file. If it is not, there will be an update to convert the .rom to .cap for Windows 8. That is how my Asus board worked.

I repeatedly hit the del key when going into Bios. If I try hitting it once, it usually just ends up booting into Windows.

you are correct, also changed above instructions. according to asus, all new series 7 boards should have shipped with .cap extension bios' while the x79 chipsets have to be converted. im still waiting to hear back if dual boot machines will be affected and if other platforms will be converted to .cap bios for win8. sorry for the confusion.
