My n00b Build
I'm a n00b, mostly Mac but know my way around and have learned lots. This is pretty much the Tier 1-2 build, using the Phenom II 560.

I'm using:
ASUS M4A88T-V EVO/USB3 880G HDMI USB 3.0 ATX AMD mobo

Phenom II X2 560 BE (would like to try unlocking, and OC later)

Hyper 212 CPU cooler

4 GB GSkill Ripjaw 4GB DDR3 1600
-->Using this instead (GeIL Value PLUS 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10660))

MSI GTX 460 Cyclone 768MB

Antec earthwatts 650w PSU

Asus dvd burner

Rosewill Challenger case

The 560 isn't listed as a compatible chip on Asus mobo page/list, but Andrew J assured me it was, as everything else in the family is there and the 560 is just a newer chip. Asus confirmed that on the phone. I figured it was also, but, wanted to make sure.

Challenger case is awesome. I have little experience building, but its great quality, looks excellent and no probs. PSU sits on little rubber standoffs/vibration isolators - cool. Top 140mm fan is directly over the Hyper 212, 1/2" away? And, the back fan is directly in the path of the 212s airflow. . . the CPU may have icicles on it?

If you are using the Coolermaster Hyper 212, you should really check to make sure you can use the Ripjaw chips with the crazy heatsinks. The 212 extends over the first slot, and won't seat because of the Ripjaws heatsinks. I considered cutting them off, or bending them sideways, but instead got some diff RAM to use. I can RMA or sell the Ripjaws, or use them for the 2nd slots. I'd like to sell them as I was trying to stay in budget (already blown).

I'm building this with my 10 year-old and he's PUMPED! (ie. Starcraft 2)

Who's the genius that started putting big heatsinks on ram anyhow? Total waste. Get that machine running, take some pictures and enjoy Starcraft!

RE: My n00b Build
Yep. I was reading the description of the Geil RAM and those also are raised up, just flat. I don't have them yet to check clearance, but if I have probs ill take the heatsink off.

The Geil should be better RAM shouldn't it? Geil, 1333, 7-7-7-24 vs. Ripjaw, 1600, 9-9-9-24-2N?

I'm taking the build slow to make sure everything is plugged in, and plugged in in the right place. Plus, teaching my son everything as we go. I'll POST with the stock CPU cooler, and Ripjaw RAM. When it's running fine, I'll add the vidcard. When the new RAM comes I'll install that and then the Hyper 212. I'm trying to do a nice job with the cable management, but I may lose patience. Smile

I had to order an 8-pin extension since the PSU is on the bottom and the Antec cable will reach directly, but not with any amount of cable routing. Sad Good news is that it has plugs for everything else in the whole world x10.

Another nit, the back fan on the Challenger case is the small three pin connector, and I believe can't be controlled by the mobo. The mobo has two sockets (CPU fan +1) for fan control and two without control. The top fan and the intake fan are both Molex.

Also, last night i was laying there realizing that my vidcard has HDMI out . . . and I pictured Starcraft on the 50" tv on the other side of the room. hmmm . . .
