In need of some reccomendations for a gaming rig
Hi, I was about to build a new computer for my Girlfriend so she can game on her PC comfortably. We got a good deal on an Asrock Motherboard, and I was looking for some advice and recommendations for what else we need. We think at most, we'll only need an i5 2500 CPU to go with the motherboard we ordered. I bought her a nice case that she liked, and will be cannibalizing parts from my old rig. We also wanted extra space, so we just ordered a Crucial M4 256GB as well. We're in California, and would like to avoid Tax, so we're avoiding Newegg.com. Amazon has been our main source to purchase parts, so we'd like to stick with them for the rest of our purchases.

Here's what we have or awaiting shipping:
ASRock MB-Z68X4G3 LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard $122 Shipped by March 2nd
Rosewill CHALLENGER-U3 Black Gaming ATX Mid Tower (Purchased)
Crucial 256 GB m4 SSD (just ordered)
Radeon 6870 (Just bought and is currently in the Old Rig)
Samsung 2tb 5400rpm HDD (Old Rig)
Antec 500w PSU (Old Rig)
CD Rom Drive (Old Rig)

I wondered with what we have now, if I would need a new PSU? Would the stock fan be enough for the cooler? (we're not going to OC the CPU) The PSU is about 3 or 4 years old, should I just get a new one? What ram would suffice? Sound Card?

I also have a WD 180/160GB Velociraptor that it's currently in her current computer. Would this be of any use anymore with the new SSD we just purchased? (storage?)

Thanks for any info you guys can provide!

RE: In need of some reccomendations for a gaming rig
PSUs cannot output as much power as they age, losing on average 5-10% of output capacity per year . In this best case scenario, your 500W PSU can now output 400-425W, in the worse case scenario, 300-350W. While it can most likely power the PC for a few months/a year without any issues, I wouldn't recommend using it for very long term. If you get any stability issues, such as freezing/BSODs and the like, the PSU will most likely be the culprit.

The stock CPU Cooler offers enough cooling to operate the CPU at safe temperatures. However, some people find that it's too noisy for their tastes. Even an inexpensive CPU Cooler, such as the Corsair A50 (~$25 on Amazon), can go a long way when it comes to reducing noise.

For RAM, 4GB is enough for today's games. Do consider that 8GB is hardly more expensive (+$20 or so), will provide some performance benefits now and is an inexpensive way to future-proof the PC.

Sound card wise, the motherboard has integrated audio. If you're the type to listen to your Ipod (or any MP3 player) with the earbuds that it came with and are perfectly happy with the sound, then the onboard audio is most likely fine for you. If you do care about sound quality, have high-quality headphones and insist on 320kbps MP3s, FLACs, WAV or AAC music files, an ASUS Xonar DG is a great investment, for only $30, it provides much higher sound quality and has an headphone amplifier that will greatly improve the sound of pretty much any earphones/headphones.

As for the Velociraptor, sure you could use it, but I don't see the point if you the 256GB M4 SSD for the OS/programs/games and the Samsung 2TB for storage.

Thanks! As for the ram, does it matter which one I get? (8gb) And with this setup, how much power would I need from a PSU?

As long as you get reliable RAM, you'll be fine. See my recommendations in the Gaming Builds for great picks.

Power wise, I'd look at a 500W PSU. Once again, see my recommendations in the Gaming Builds for great picks.

In your recommendations, you have a Silverstone 500W 80PLUS for $60, but it's now displaying $85.10 + $7 shipping. Would there be anything else in that range you could recommend? Thanks.

You can find it at Newegg for $60 when I checked earlier this evening.

RE: In need of some reccomendations for a gaming rig
I was trying to stay away from newegg because i'm in california, and I get taxed. Any good Amazon equivalents?

Would this be good?
http://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-eXtr...764&sr=8-1
$40 - $10 MIR for a slick $30.

Or This:
http://www.amazon.com/OCZ-ModXStream-Mod...418&sr=1-1
$64.75 -$20 MIR = $44.75 and it's semi modular.

RE: In need of some reccomendations for a gaming rig
Oh yeah, right, no Newegg, my bad.

I wouldn't recommend the first one.

The second PSU would be a fine choice. This is also an alternative, $50 without MIR: http://www.amazon.com/OCZ-StealthXStream...003UQSGZM/
