Adventure continues - Radeon 7970 errors on OCCT
Welp, I think I might have found the source of my instability problem. Ran OCCT on only the 7970 with Direct X 10, and after about 10 minutes, it dropped from 230fps to 40fps and spit out like 3million (no exaggeration) errors. I didnt even notice it until like 35 minutes in.

Ugh. Here we go again.

So i went pretty hard after memory errors -
memtest86+: per stick and overall stack
HCI MemTest: 8 threads running 2MB each for 130% coverage
Ran Prime95 on Blended for 6 hours
Then ran OCCT as mentioned.

So since I got a hit on the GPU, need to confirm its not the CPU causing it.
Just finished 5 runs of LinX without a hitch - running only 4 threads though as was recommended instead of 8.
So now running large FFTs on Prime95 overnight.

So keeping my fingers crossed that its only the GPU. Much easier to swap out if issues than a mobo or CPU issue.

Thoughts / comments are welcome.

Cheerio.

Millions of errors? Geez, definitely sounds like there's something wrong with your card, I'd exchange it.

Yeah tons of errors. I might have missed an order of magnitude, but it clearly was at the very least 300k+ and growing by either 10k per second or 100k per second (if it was 3M).

Anyway I posted a similar thread on the tweaktown, and everyone is all over how many tests I did not yet do! LOL. Of course 1 failure could be caused by others, but c'mon folks!

Then again my entire intuition on this build have been far off... so before dealing with that internet company again (which I despise), will do more tests.. might as well.. it's a Sunday. What else have I got to do... uh, other than RL.

Cheers dear sir.
BTW - here's a quote from the same thread when I posted Mathieu's build on the forum. Haha - bravo Mathieu!

Quote:I wonder if your video card is running too hot and possibly throttling down, but it shouldn't take 20 minutes to cool down.
Nice system!!!

~81-82C is unlikely to cause throttling as far as I know. Wouldn't hurt to try the programs that profjim suggested on the tweaktown forums, and to see how performance is.

RE: Adventure continues - Radeon 7970 errors on OCCT
Yup, althought I still will do more tests, seems that the concensus is that OCCT is a bit brutal when it comes to tests, and (as you said) the other programs like FurMark and 3DMark11 are more suitable for benchmarking and/or burning in the card. Coupled with the fact that the drivers are still new, will need to give it a few more months or so.

So as of now FurMark seems to be good, beating the other single GPU chip performance from other testers, and the 3DMark11 is right on with the OCZ overclockers club review when using the same tests (without OCing the GPU). All in all, won't sweat it now.

Here's the new thread for discussion if anyone is interested:

So off to test more RAM, CPU etc!
