(Solved) Fuzzy resolution after installing Catalyst Drivers - Radeon HD 7970
Hi everyone,

I'm almost getting there with my build. I'm currently running with a Sapphire Radeon HD 7970 with a single ViewSonic vx2753mh-LED, and after installing the catalyst software, the text seems quite fuzzy.

On the standard VGA driver (what I'm typing to you now in), it seems good. However for some reason, ever after playing with several settings, cleartype fonts, resolutions (1920x1080. 1080p) it still seems fuzzy. Of course each time, it's plugged into the same card as there are no native ports on the motherboard. I switched the HDMI ports with the same result, although I have not tried the VGA cable yet. However given the cable is connected the same ports when I'm installing / uninstalling... doubt it's cables at least.

I noticed a small difference. The Radeon drivers support up to 60Hz with 1080p, however the VGA supports "default". I think somewhere I read that this monitor supports up to 75Hz, but not sure that it is being used given I can't tell what Windows is doing.

Any troubleshooting techniques you can recommend?

Thanks much (as always).

Hmmm, that one is beyond my knowledge. I'd try contacting Sapphire customer support, see what they tell you.

RE: Fuzzy resolution after installing Catalyst Drivers - Radeon HD 7970
This happened to me once on my desktop. I went to Nvidia control panel and created a custom resolution and changed the resolution there on the video card controls. I have catalyst on my laptop, but I can't figure out how to do custom resolutions. Its also a common problem with HDMI cables, go ahead and try DVI and VGA cables to see if its really the cable or not.

I tried another HDMI cable that came with the monitor, and it's the same effect. If I go to a resolution just below (1776x1000), it becomes crisp again.

Realized that although I have VGA port on my monitor, I don't have the VGA port on the 7970. Used the DVI to VGA converter (as there is no DVI port on the monitor) and same effect as well.

I even tried using the older driver out of the box thinking maybe they "broke" something in the latest release. Tried both from Sapphire site and AMD site. No luck.

I did submit a ticket, however I do know they are not good at responding. So any additional tips / ideas is very welcome. Smile

Cheers.

I'd check the AMD forums too, there might be a thread about that.

Hey all,

Got it resolved! Just had to have the right combination. Here's the solution after the post for those interested.

Et ben, faut manipuler les parametres dans VECC pour cela .. GPU Scaling, pixel format ratio, ou MS Clear Type dans Windows .. ou soit les parametres disponibles dans le menu de ton ecran ..

Salut Gr33nGecko.

Thanks for the help & fast reply. Where would I find the VECC parameters? Is that separate from Catalyst or same thing? I tried checking most every parameter in Catalyst functionality set (and on the monitor), and MS Clear Type? I haven't seen any pixel format ratio or GPU scaling parameters for example. Is that part of Trixx?

Merci.

Edit:
Aha, your a genius. I typed into google "pixel format ratio" and found it!

Key was under:
My Digital Flat-Panels --> Scaling Options --> Overscan to 0%

Et voila!

Ah, the overscan option, of course, forgot about that one. Glad to hear that you've figured it out Smile

Yeah, I know. Me 2. Smile. Sometimes it comes down to knowing exactly how to word the problem in google to find it. I even played with that setting, but amd has an odd way of saying "turn off overscan", no? I think when i was playing with it before, I stopped just short of 0% because i felt it touched the edges too much. Lol, figures.

Very least I could do phrosty. I can't tell you how many times I got stuck here and Mathieu, Ichi, you, others helped out without hesitation. This forum makes computer building not only fun again, but a real community. If it was another forum, may not have done it. Wink

That, and everyone here never treats you like your second rate citizen. I cant tell you how many times I look at my older posts 3 weeks ago when I started my project and I facepalm. Big Grin. However, the responses were always extremely courteous & patient.

Cheers all,

This is nice, a reliable resource where AFAIK nearly all troubleshooting was solved.
