RE: First build - Cooler & Dr Debug error questions
You want to test one stick at a time, so if you get any errors, you'll know which one it is. The test itself doesn't take that long to run one pass, you can probably test every stick in an evening.

If after trying all your sticks, you get no error, I would also recommend testing the RAM in each one of other RAM slots, since the issue could be a defective RAM slot instead.

Uh oh. Instead of waking up to see a pass fail report, I come to see that the memtest86 screen is completely full of garbage characters. This was with a the full set of sticks in the board.

That could be what? Bad mobo? CPU? Still ram? Saw even a mention on the web that the GPU could be potential failure point.

What should I do next to test, or is this result a clear indication of what's wrong?

Ugh.

Which version of Memtest86 are you using?

Edit: Looks like v4.0a, which is known to have that issue.

Use MemTest86+ 4.20 instead: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Benc...plus.shtml

Indeed it was memtest86 v4.0a.

I downloaded memtest86+ in the past hearing that 86 was no longer up to date. But I noticed the release of memtest86 was newer than 86+ (Aug 2011 vs Jan 2011), so I downloaded that instead.

Will do that when I get off of work. I am relieved though that it's a known issue.

Thanks for the protip.

EDIT: Running 86+ now. Any recommendations to validate any pass/errors with other programs or should 86+ be sufficient.

First build - Cooler & Dr Debug error questions
Hey Mathieu, everyone,

I ran through about 11 hours on Memtest86+ with 1 stick on the first slot, with no errors.

Now to speed things up, I took out the first stick and replaced a 2nd stick, however this time on the 2nd slot. Figure as long as I put the correct stick in the correct slot when I put them all back (given no errors), should be ok. So will backtrack if a stick fails to determine if it's the slot or the stick itself. Figure it's as good as a method of elimination as any.

Anyway thanks for the tip again Mathieu on the memtest86 4.0a. I did run that DVD on my old box to see what it would do, but didn't seem to have the same problem. So it's related to the sandy bridge architecture?

Cheers.

First build - Cooler & Dr Debug error questions
Hey Mathieu, all,

The memtest86+ tests are going well. On my last 4gb stick on my last slot. Figured I'd speed it up a bit and let it do 3 passes on the last two.

One thing that I thought was odd however is I noticed after it tested the 2048-3064 MB range, it jumped to 4096 - 5112? Is that normal (known small labeling bug) or something you have seen before?

Thanks.

RE: First build - Cooler & Dr Debug error questions
Do not try to speed it up, 7 passes is usually the recommended minimum. You might miss some errors by trying to speed up things.

As for the tested range, it's a tad weird, but seeing as it ends up testing a total of 4096MB in the end, it's most likely not a problem.

Ah yikes. Was a little over zealous reading your prior post about testing them all in an evening and testing slots! Wink

Well I ended up getting 3 passes in for both the last two (12-16 for the first two). I just set all 4 back in the slots i tested them in prior and will now let it run all night. So as I literally just did that will let it run.

Dang! You reply fast! Big Grin

Honestly. This site is great. Thanks for all your help thus far. Rare to find forums with such help and patience.

Very much appreciated.

Oh, and someday I may actually get around to gaming! LOL.

Well finished 10 passes in 22 hours with the full 16GB in, and all good. So i reinstalled Windows again given i think it was acting wierd from the prior. Probably due to the RAM seating.

The other odd thing is the usb boot problem with my gaming mouse seemed to go away. No more B4 errors after the last CMOS reset, so not sure what has changed. All i have been doing were memtest86+ tests since that last clr.

So guess will contine my config and see where that leads me. Thanks again for all your help.
