What tier is my PC?
I bought a Sager gaming laptop back in 2008. I'm currently looking to build my first PC based around one of the tiers provided on the website, but want to know what tier my laptop falls under first (I assume quite low now) so I have a reference point.

Sager M570RU
Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 2.10 GHz
NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTS
4.00 GB RAM

Let me know if I should provide any additional info.

RE: What tier is my PC?
Compared to other laptops:
The 9800M GTS is about as powerful as the GT 540M/GT 630M. The price of a laptop with the GT 540M/GT 630M is around $600. I would tier your laptop at either 1 or 2.

Compared to HR desktop tiers:
Like you theorized, your laptop is quite low when comparing to the desktop tiers. The gaming performance of the 9800M GTS is no where close to even the lower tier (tier .75)'s GT 550 Ti.

If you give a list of games/software you want to run efficiently, it will help us help you better at picking computer parts/tiers.

RE: What tier is my PC?
Haha yeah that's about what I expected, tier 1. Thanks so much for the response.

Games I want to play on PC:
Farcry 3
Skyrim (probably heavily modded)
Witcher 2
XCOM
Battlefield 3
Saints Row the Third
GTA V (maybe, might just play on xbox)

Basically right now I have a 360 and an aging PC. In the past, what I've liked to do is play games that are primarily online multiplayer (like Borderlands 1 and 2, COD series, Halo, etc.) as well as platformers and smaller arcade titles on the 360 (except for Battlefield; that "beta" on 360 sucked). However, I like to play big open world type games or more PC centric games on the PC. This also includes games that have good modding communitied (i.e. GTA and elder scrolls).

RE: What tier is my PC?
I'm thinking 1920x1080. That is also something I'll need to shop for, but I'm thinking the price bump up to x1200 probably isn't worth it for me. I haven't had a desktop since back when I lived with my parents 5+ years ago so I'm starting from scratch.

RE: What tier is my PC?
I would say a Tier 3 or 4 as Skyrim with mods can use up a lot more resources. You should be able to play on max settings.

RE: What tier is my PC?
That surprises me. What is the purpose of a tier 8 or 9 PC if even a 3 or 4 (low end of the middle tier PCs) can run Skyrim on high? I would have expected Skyrim to be quite demanding.

Also, any additional input would be appreciated if anyone disagrees with Ricky's assessment. Thanks!

Just get a video card with 4 GB of ram for a modded skyrim. You can upgrade any tier with it as long as the power supply is enough.

Here's a VRAM question that's getting a lot of love from repliers at Tom's Hardware:

Sorry i should have asked this before.

What is your budget? That would be a great base line of where to start.

A tier 3 or 4 would work great at that resolution. But i would go with a tier 5 or 6 for the unlocked processor, and a either a 7950 or 7970 extra vram.
