More GPU for the money - PwnBroker - 06-13-2016

is it just me or does it seem that we are getting more gpu for the money, as compared to previous years, with the new releases from both nvidia and amd?

RE: More GPU for the money - Brandonsr - 06-18-2016

It certainly seems that way to me aswell. Maybe it's because everyone is pushing for 4k monitors. When I heard about the GTX 1070 and it's price for performance I couldn't pass up on it.

Agreed. So Brandonsr, you preordered one or you have one in your hot little hands?

I have it in my hot little hands. My R9 290 died on me, so I was anxious to get a new card to finish The Witcher 3.

That's so cool bud. How are you liking it?

I'm stuck with my dual 980ti's (poor me I know), which I guess is ok given with my new air cooling mount I highly doubt I could fit the new high bandwidth SLI connector given they stick out from the card from a bit.

Happy u picked one of these up and got one shipped not long after ur 290 croaked. Was it just a lucky timing or did you have no rig while waiting for them to come in?

@pedwards
It's a pretty good card, I can't complain at all. Temps are relatively decent, granted you know what to expect from a reference cooler. I would say paired with a 1440p panel the 1070 will feel right at home.

The timing was pretty good, I ran on-board graphics for maybe two weeks before I picked the 1070 up. Of course I would have rather not had to spend the money on a new gpu, but I'm really happy with it overall. I don't game as much as I use to, but having the ability taken away sucks lol.

now if they would just test these cards before they release the design. the 480 is spiking 90 watts on the pcie rail and neither the 1070, 1080 seem to work with Vive via display port

Yeah no kidding. Was just reading about that thinking of helping a cousin's build and I saw that about the pcie load and then yesterday's about the vive on the 1080/70. Unfortunate to say the least.

Oh and it's heating up with the 1060 announced to be 15% faster than the 480 while 70% more efficient. An interesting year for GPUs indeed.

yeah the 1060 looks to be a descent mid range card priced in the 480 range but if sli is in the future the 1060 aint the card since it has no sli plug. if i was looking at a single card to start and then add a card later then the 480 is a very good deal if you are running 1440p and above. at 1440p crossfired 480's sit between the 1070 and 1080 and at 4k res they will beat the 1080.

Ah yes, excellent point on the 480 Xfire option here. Very important consideration. Was just comparing card performance given my cousin isn't a troubleshooter (single card less headache) and I don't live states side to help. Certainly makes this an entirely interesting mix in the GPU space, no?

Although not sure I've seen how the 480s xfire beats outright a 1080 at 4K. I've seen them trade blows and fairly neck and neck when not optimized for either platform. Granted if one can handle the xfire config then certainly the 2x$249 vs 1x$599 is nothing to sneeze at!

No wonder Mathieu has not updated his "best GPUs" for the money post yet ... Changes almost daily as of late!
