Wireless Router with a HTPC - Edgerunner - 02-08-2015

My Father wants me to build him a HTPC so he can get rid of his ungodly high satellite bill.

He has an older laptop and he is using a Verizon 4G wireless router.
My question/s is... will this router bottleneck his buffering speed at all when using the Budget HTPC information as a guide? Should I step up the Mobo, CPU and GPU at all because he is an impatient man and waiting while things buffer is not an option for him LOL.

Can you be more specific on the type of router?

You said Verizon 4G. to me 4G means cellular data (like 4G or 4G LTE) so that can mean lots of different things.

if it is cellular data, does his plan have data limits?

verizons 4g lte usually has enough bandwidth to handle movie streaming. for standard streaming 3 meg is usually sufficient. for HD content, 4-6 meg minimum, for 4k, 16meg.

do a speed test and see what speeds you get. as for the components, I helped filosophy build a kick butt system a year or so ago using a micro case and amd's a8 or a10 processor. he used the igpu for movie play and light gaming. HTPC's usually don't require that much power, but depending if any heavy duty gaming is involved.

It's a Verizon Jetpack 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot 890L

OK I ran a Speedtest via Speedtest.net.
Upload 3.23 Mbps
Download 7.27 Mbps

I am thinking that he can run the HTPC but may need to upgrade his package.

Opinions???

Netflix suggests 5.0 Mbps for HD.
Amazon HD is 3.5 Mbit/sec
(edit: this will be download bandwidth)

he wont have any problems running it as long as the latency is below 100ms(which lte usually is) but he may run into data cap problems. if you are referring to his data package then he may have to increase it. here is a rough rule of thumb that is pretty accurate, figure about 1 Gb/hour of standard def streaming and about 2 to 3 Gb/hour for HD streaming. in a months time we may use about 50 to 100 gig just for Netflix and vudu.
