Radeon 6950 Unlock to 6970! - MathieuB - 12-28-2010

According to the following article from TechPowerup, currently all Radeon HD 6950 can be unlocked to a Radeon 6970 (shaders and frequencies) via a GPU BIOS Flash.

This is an easy way to gain performance and to get the performance of a Radeon 6970 at the price of the Radeon HD 6950!

Now that I'm thinking about it, this is giving me an excuse to sell my Radeon HD 6850 and upgrade to a Radeon HD "6970" Tongue

Looks good! I hope AMD doesn't mind, just like triple core unlocked into quad & quad into hex. Those who wanted to, "could" try. Biostar & Asrock even sells motherboards made for this & Asrock (if I remember correctly) bundled a tri-core that was guaranteed to successfully unlock.

As for the stability, I'm not so sure, as I've never tried myself, but have googled that not everyone got what they "hoped" to get.

But if it sells more HD6950s, good for them! ;-)

If I buy a 6950 today and unlock it, if they fix it making me unable to buy a 2nd later for crossfire, will the REAL 6970 card work in crossfire with a radeon 6950 unlocked to a 6970? I need to know cause im doing your tier 5 mainstream build and will probobly order in a few days. Thanks!

RE: Radeon 6950 Unlock to 6970! - MathieuB - 12-30-2010

Yes, it would work, since the system sees the "6950" as a 6970. Besides, you can crossfire different models, I.e.6950 and 6970 without a problem.
Also, make sure to get the right PSU for your PC to be capable of handling two 6970 in Crossfire. See the latest High-end Gaming PCs article on HR for more details.

The 6950 has two 6-pin power connectors and the 6970 has one 6-pin and one 8-pin. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't it mean that if the 6950 is unlocked to a 6970, that the card wouldn't have enough power supplied? (I'm sorry if this sounds stupid, I'm still learning about PC hardware...just built my first PC in September (specs below)Smile

By the way, as an owner of a 6950, I'm not undertaking this procedure. I'm pretty conservative when it comes to PCs and stability is more important to me than anything else.

They actually answered your question in the article that I link to in my first post.6pin + 6 pin is enough.
