USB & Audio Stopped working in ASUS Rampage III Extreme - Tony J - 10-15-2011

Description: Built this copmputer from a build last year with a swap out for the MB mentioned above. From the get go I've had problems with the USB ports on this system - not recognizing the keyboard, mouse, etc.
This is my 3rd board which was RMA's directly with ASUS - replaced it everything seemed to work fine. I removed the fan controller yesterday as #2 controller was not working (got an RMA for it). WHen I put everything back together to use the PC without the controller the usb ports and audio were not recognized. Looked at all the connections everything looks fine. Reset the CMOS still no luck.

Anyone have any other thoughts? I'm about to give up on this board which just can't seem to stay up.....anyone recommend a new 1366 board? thinking of running to Fry's to get this one:
ASUS Sabertooth X58 Intel X58 1366 Motherboard

The build parts are listed in my epilog

Maybe your ports aren't properly grounded? Is the backplate in correctly and not backwards?

Yeah - I didn't remove the MB so everything was pretty much static. All I removed was the controller, the temp wires and fan wires. Reconnected the fan wires. That was it.....very simple..
but it must of did something when I removed it otherwise it should just boot fine..... Sad
thanks for the quick reply!

Well what can I say, went to Fry's and got the Sabertooth for 170, (included a $25 rebate). Pulled out the old rampage, rewired and put the new board in. and Voila - boots on the first try - no issues.....this tells me the Rampage ain't worth the $'s......sure I'll miss some of the features but not the headaches......thanks for all the support.

Glad you figured it out!

Couple thoughts on the Sabertooth versus the Rampage III Extreme - the space between the video cards is non existent in the Sabertooth - concerned about cooling - though with the CM HAF X - it does have the GPU duct fan and the side panel fans blowing on the cards.
Rampage has all the fancy LED's and status lights on the board (oooh purty lights LOL)
ROG and blue tooth where you could set your overclocking through your phone or iPad - pretty cool....(but would take stability any time)

On the upside Sabertooth as the extra PCI slot on top for a dedicated sound card
More internal USB's
Doesn't require 4 power connections - the Rampage required your standard connections 24 pin and 8 pin but also another 8 pin plus a molex connection at the bottom of the board.

Glad to hear that the new mobo fixed your issues. Regarding cooling, just keep an eye on your temperatures. As long as they are under 90C, you're fine. Between 90C and 100C, they are running hot, but still below their maximum temperature.

Thanks Matheiu - been watching closely - using the the ATI management software and saw it hit 71c (highest I've seen so far) - then it quickly drops down to around 34c as I tab out of the game to check it out. Keeping the ASUS probe out and the CPU has been hitting 46c or less. So far so good, but I have to admit it was nice having that extra slot between the boards.
