4x1GB vs. 2x2GB??? - Chiko - 12-13-2010

im sure this question gets asked a lot but i can seem to find a definite answer...

Which is better? a 2x2gb RAM kit or a 1x4gb RAM kit?

what are the pros and cons of each, assume the mobo has 4 ram slots.

I don't know, but I can tell you what Mathieu told me when I asked if I should use 4x2gb sticks instad of 2x4gb sticks.

"Less sticks is better actually, for lower power consumption, less issues with compatibility, lower latencies and you still have two free slots to upgrade in the future if you want to."

Yep, exactly. 2x2GB is better than 4 x1GB for the same reasons that 2x4GB is better than 4x2GB.

Actually, I think he was asking about using a single 4gb stick, so wouldn't that be even better than 2x2gb using the above logic?

No it wouldn't, because it would run in single channel mode and would be half as fast.
